there’s a cockerel that waits
a blue & red swagger
high on the island’s divide
our sweat
our muddy feet
our clawing fingers
work the roots
towards his beak
a jungle silent
beyond our skin
About the author
Sue Fitchett lives in covenanted bush on Waiheke Island. Retired as a clinical psychologist, she is an avid conservationist, particularly with birds, and is also a volunteer firefighter.
Sue’s poetry has appeared in various New Zealand and Australian journals, and she has published or edited four books, including a previous sole collection (Palaver Lava Queen, AUP, 2004).
