Description

Celebrating a century of architectural achievement in Wellington, this book links the progression of style characteristics — from raupo thatching to art deco ornament — with the development of the city. It contains biographical information about more than 300 architects associated with Wellington at various times — plus photos, elevations and reproductions of rare plans. Detailed appendices and an illustrated glossary complete the book. The author’s last collaboration was the prize-winning Ring Around the City, documenting the development of Wellington’s suburbs.

About the author

Geoff Mew has had a lifelong interest in historic places and in researching the stories of those associated with them. His fascination with architectural detail has resulted in several published articles, leading to more general work on how styles have changed over time, and the architects who created or adapted them.

Adrian Humphris is Team Leader, City Archives at Wellington City Council, where he has worked for over twenty years. He has always had a keen interest in Wellington architects, in particular those active from the early 1900s when the introduction of electric trams changed the face of Wellington. Adrian lives in Karori with his wife and family.
